Michael Jacques in His Own Words

Meet Michael, who’s story of perseverance, positivity, and advocacy is touching lives and changing mindsets. Despite living with autism and facing challenges with reading and writing, Michael has accomplished many things, from writing books to delivering hundreds of presentations that inspire others to see the potential in every person, regardless of their abilities.

From an early age, Michael faced difficulties with speech and reading, often feeling frustrated as he watched others learn more easily. However, he never gave up. With the support of his family, friends, and community, Michael learned to creatively overcome his challenges and found his unique way to success.

Michael is described by those close to him as joyful, full of humor and optimism. His positivity and never-give-up attitude touch everyone around him, making people smile, laugh and feel at ease. One of Michael's most cherished friendships began when he was three years old. This bond was built on mutual respect and love. "He didn't see me as a person with disabilities, he just saw me as Michael," said Michael, reflecting on the importance of acceptance and belonging.

Michael has worked at Sobeys for many years, where he has built strong relationships and has become an integral part of the team. His job provides him with a sense of belonging, and purpose, as he interacts with customers, community members and co-workers.

Michael’s story doesn’t stop at his personal achievements. He has taken his message of perseverance and inclusion to a broader audience, delivering over 500 presentations to schools and organizations. His talks focus on the power of inclusion, belonging, and overcoming challenges in life. One of his early public speaking experiences was nerve-wracking, but with determination, he grew more comfortable. Today, Michael is a confident and engaging speaker, inspiring others to see beyond disabilities.

Michael’s message is clear:

"Everyone has value and worth, no matter who you are."

Despite being unable to read or write, Michael felt that with creative measures, he could write a book about his life. Using speech-to-text technology, he authored his first book, Can’t Read, Can’t Write: Here’s My Book, an achievement that he holds as one of his proudest moments.

Michael’s advocacy extends to children as well. Through his work with schools and organizations, he’s influencing the younger generation to understand the importance of diversity and inclusion. His presentations, along with his books, provide a platform for meaningful discussions on how we can all create a more accepting and inclusive world.

Michael’s message is clear: "Everyone has value and worth, no matter who you are." His story teaches us that despite life’s challenges, with community and a strong network around you, success is achievable for anyone. Through his advocacy, Michael is reshaping how society views people with disabilities, inspiring others to recognize the full potential within every person.

Michael continues to make a lasting impact on everyone he meets. His story isn’t just about overcoming obstacles — it’s about redefining what’s possible for all of us.
