The lights dim. The room goes quiet. Somewhere backstage, Brock Welton waits for his cue. Moments later, he walks into the spotlight — not as someone pretending to be a character, but as someone who has found where he truly belongs.

Today, Brock proudly calls himself an actor. But discovering that passion began with one opportunity, a supportive family, and the courage to step onto a stage for the very first time.

When he was young, Brock would attend shows at his local theatre and leave mesmerized. He wanted more — to become a part of the show. After discovering his strong interest in performing arts, his mother looked for ways to get him on the stage. 

He auditioned for TOROS (Theatre Outreach on Stage), an inclusive youth theatre program in North Bay that welcomes young people with different backgrounds, identities, and skill levels. Here, Brock could learn to act, revel in performing, and be around other young people who shared his love for the stage. He even sang a rendition of "O Canada," and earned a callback.

As rehearsals began, Brock opened up to his castmates and staff at TOROS. He befriended people like Dustin, another TOROS student who'd sit with him every day during breaks. And Jesse, the director, who recognized his growth as a quiet kid and watched him connect with everyone around him.

Brock's presence in the program shone as he stepped into each rehearsal with genuine excitement. Even in a highly technical environment, his enthusiasm naturally draws people in. When the cast and directors saw how fully he committed — singing every song, knowing every dance once the music started — they brought him forward to the frontline. He shows up, he participates, and he becomes someone others want in the spotlight because his passion elevates the whole group.  

Along the way, discovered something unexpected — his love for dance. He met a dance choreographer who immediately recognized his eagerness to learn and he's now looking to join adult classes at her studio. What made the biggest difference for Brock throughout TOROS was simple. They treated him just like any other kid who walks through the door. They saw his joy and his commitment, and they celebrated it. The experience has been life-changing for Brock, giving him a place where he can keep discovering who he is.

When Brock steps into the spotlight, he isn't simply playing a role. He's standing exactly where he belongs.
